What’s the way to Russian legend Maria Sharapova’s heart? It might seem like a tough question, but loyal followers of the former WTA number one star know the answer—food. And if the food happens to be Italian, consider it a bonus. Recently, the icon’s fiancee put his culinary skills to the test, to delight his partner. Well, it seems the plan worked perfectly!
Sharapova and Alexander Gilkes visited Venice at the beginning of last December. The WTA legend dropped videos and pictures of her trip on her IG platform, and it seemed like they had a lot of fun in the iconic Italian city. The couple enjoyed their time at the renovated Palazzo Grimani museum and experienced a lavish boat ride in the Venetian Lagoon.
However, the most exciting part of their trip was experiencing the world-famous Italian cuisine. The Russian legend and her Briton fiance attended Acquastanca in Murano Restaurant and had authentic Venetian food.
Upon returning from Venice, it seems like the Sharapova-Gilkes family still couldn’t get over the hang of their exclusive winter trip. The Russian former Grand Slam winner shared a story on her IG platform showcasing her bowl full of cheesy spaghetti that looked delicious. “Farmer’s market chanterelles by chef @gilkesa,” wrote Sharapova as her story’s caption. Following the dish and her caption, it seemed like the couple has a knack for Italian food. Not to forget Sharapova’s adorable mention of how good a cook her fiance is!
Now, the Russian legend has always acceptedthat she loves Italian cuisine. In 2018, she attended her friend’s wedding in the European country and praised their food with high compliments. “The zucchini blossoms, grilled polyp, summer tomatoes, fried scampi, boquerones, or the non gluten zucchini pasta we just inhaled at Lo Scoglio, were just right. Italy, you just do it right,” she said in an interview. Her words could echo her emotions about the food.
However, Italian food is an emotion for Sharapova. Hard to believe? Remember her emotional post for Italy during the pandemic? She urged the Italians to stay home and revealed her deep connection with the country. Likewise, she mentioned her attachment to the country’s food.
Maria Sharapova revealed she “ate more pasta Genovese than anyone should be allowed to”
In 2020, Italy suffered massively during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sharapova, who shares a keen bond with the country, urged the countrymen to stay at home. “I was introduced to Italy as a little girl and fell in love with it immediately. In all fairness, it is very hard not to fall in love with. 😉🤷🏼♀️As @vanityfairitalia put together these images in support of Italy, I couldn’t help but reminisce on all the beautiful memories I hold. In the past year, I spent most of my training in Italy and considered it my second home, I ate more pasta Genovese than anyone should be allowed to. “ said Sharapova.
Her words echoed her emotions about the country and her deep association with its food. Sharapova added how she made friends in Italy and drove around the country roads while receiving frantic reactions from cab drivers for her poor driving skills. The way Sharapova narrated it seemed like she has significant memories in the country’s every corner. Fun times in Italy for Maria!
At long last, this WTA legend shared her wish to revisit the country with a heartfelt statement that could express her emotions seeing Italy struggling with the pandemic. “As we navigate through so many unknowns together, let’s do it with kindness, love, and optimism—All the beautiful qualities Italia has shared with me,” she concluded.
Maria Sharapova’s love for Italian food and Italyis evident. Following her recent social media post, it seemed like her fiance also understands how the way to her heart goes from her stomach and if it is Italian food, there is a hundred percent chance that this Russian legend will be impressed!
